Whichever type of hide you choose, you need to also understand the tanning process, and how it adds or detracts from the quality of the leather. Leather was once the skin of an animal, and therefore must go through a tanning process to strengthen it, and to keep it from decomposing. Tanning makes the skin stable and rot proof without sacrificing its structure and strength. The tanning process involves several stages, including the removal of the hair and the outer layer of skin, as well as the fatty part of the flesh. The hide is then stabilized by one of several methods using animal oils, alum, chrome salts or vegetable tanning. How it is actually finished determines the quality, or riding grade, for our purposes.

To fully understand choices available, one must first understand the term grain. The grain is the epidermis, or outer layer of the zebra skin rugs. While imperfections such as cuts, scars, and scratches will exist, the grain in its natural state has the best fiber strength, and therefore the best durability. The grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort to the wearer.

The most common material used for motorcycle leathers is cowhide rugs, chosen for its strength and durability. It is anywhere from 1-1.3mm thick, depending on the tanning process, is naturally warm, and will afford the utmost protection against road rash. The ultimate in riding grade leather, cowhide is the choice of bikers everywhere.

Muni bus where a dead body was found after it had been parked in a storage yard for nearly six hours lacked functioning security cameras, although the system had been tested and worked a week earlier.

A cleaning crew discovered the body of Christopher Feasel, 37, of San Francisco around midnight Oct. 16 aboard a 5-Fulton that had been parked since 6:30 p.m. after completing a rush-hour shift, Muni spokesman Judson True said.

In response to a request from The Examiner, Muni acknowledged that the security cameras aboard the bus were not working during the time leading up to it being parked in the yard. The bus, however, did have functioning cameras just a week before the incident, True said.

Sometime between the testing and the incident the recorders stopped working, he said.

The cameras had been tested as part of a wide-ranging effort to review the technology on all Muni vehicles following previous high-
profile incidents that lacked recordings. Those incidents included the stabbing of a young boy last month and a collision between two streetcars at the West Portal station that injured 48 people July 18. Tests of the cameras are ongoing, True said.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “We’re working hard to get cameras working.”

Footage from the Solar security cameras may not have told the entire story of what led to Feasel’s death, but it could have provided “a lot of information that you wouldn’t have otherwise,” said David Sklansky, a professor at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law.

A notable example was the widely circulated footage of the fatal shooting of an unarmed passenger by a then-BART police officer at an Oakland station New Year’s Day.

Desktop Microscopist Update Information

Desktop Microscopist 2.0 is shipping. The current version of Desktop Microscopist 2 is 2.2a. f you are interested in what the recent updates are all about, we now have a link to a Change History page which describes them. (Thanks to all the users who have sent in bugs and feature upgrades. Please Keep Them Coming!!!!).
Identifying Keys

At present there are two styles of keys for Desktop Microscopist. Updates are available for both old and new key versions. If your key is shaped like a rectangular box, it is an old one. The new keys are sort of ovoid and do not require the D.M. Init. If your key is sort of flat and serrated, it probably provides access to your house or car. Keys of this sort will be of little use in the operation of Desktop Microscopist; but we suggest you hang onto them anyway.
Downloading Instructions

All updates are a Binhex 4.0 self extracting archive (sea). To download these files from Netscape: Click on the Desired file name and hold down the mouse button. Wait for the Pop Up Menu to appear. Select “Save This Link as…” from the menu. Save the file to someplace where you can find it again. The files are in a self-extracting format. Simply double click on the compression icon and find a folder where you want to store the program.

* NOTE: If you are running Netscape and have helper applications appropriately configured, a single click on the desired link should suffice to cause a download and automatic expansion.

The available updates and demos are listed below. The above downloading sequence may be used on the listed files. I
Demo Software 2.2

Desktop Microscopist Demos are full featured demonstration versions of Desktop Microscopist 2.2. Their primary limitation is that the crystals upon which the programs operate cannot be changed. However, this limitation can have an impact on some of the functionality of the demo. If you have any questions or concerns, or see something that appears to be a bug, please drop us a line.
DesktopDEMO_PPC

DesktopDEMO_PPC is a native Power Macintosh version of the Desktop Microscopist demo. It will only run on Power Macintoch Computers.

(If you have an older version of the MacOS, you may need to

down load the Navigation Library)
DM_FPU_DEMO

DM_FPU_DEMO is a 680×0 Native version of the Desktop Microscopist demo. This program will only run on 68020, 68030 & 68040 computers with floating point co-processors. Although this version will also run on Power Macintoch computers running Software FPU, why bother…just download the Power Mac. native version.
Network Software

Network versions of Desktop Microscopist are designed to allow access by a specified number of concurrent users. Network configurations allow any user on the network to use a version of Desktop Microscopist which may reside on a local hard disk. Network software requires a Network Keyserver which permits operation and keeps track of the number of concurrent users. Network versions are very handy where many users need periodic access to Desktop Microscopist.

In order to effectively utilize network versions of Desktop Microscopist which have been downloaded from this web site, a copy of D.M. KeyServer >= v1.0 must be obtained. The earlier version of D.M. KeyServer, when used in conjunction with the software available from this site, is only effective for the generation of error messages. But hey, it takes all kinds.
D.M. KeyServer

Server is a program supplied by Rainbow technologies which is necessary for support of network versions of Desktop Microscopist. Server runs within the machine on the network where the Desktop MIcroscopist hardware key is physically located. Server maintains a connection to the key, keeps track of the number of concurrent users, and provides access permission to users on the network desiring to use Desktop Microscopist. In order to use software obtained via this net site, Server must be running in the background. Although, the program can be launched by hand it is recommended that Server is stored in the Startup Folder in the System Folder.

DesktopNetPPC is a native Power Macintosh version of Desktop Microscopist. DesktopNetPPC requires a Power Macintosh to run and will not function on other Macintosh computers. This program accesses the hardware key across a network. This provides any user on the network with the ability to run the software, limited by the maximum number of concurrent users licensed to the site. The current version is 2.2a

(If you have an older version of the MacOS, you may need to

down load the Navigation Library)
DesktopNetFPU

DesktopNetFPU is a 680×0 Native / FPU Network version of Desktop Microscopist. DesktopNetFPU requires a Macintosh with a 68020, 68030 or 68040 processor and a floating point co-processor (FPU). This program accesses the hardware key across a network. This provides any user on the network withthe ability to run the software, limited by the maximum number of concurrent users licensed to the site. The current version is 2.2a
Single User Versions
Upgrades Are Free For 1 Year.

Single user versions of Desktop Microscopist are licensed for a single computer and require a hardware key to operate. The hardware key is attached to the ADB port, often at the back of the computer in line with the keyboard. The hardware key must be present for Desktop Microscopist to function. There are separate compiled versions for the FPU and the PPC Macintosh. The current version is 2.2a.
DesktopPPC

DesktopPPC is the single user version of Desktop Microscopist for the Power Macintosh. This is a native Power Mac application and as such it will only run on Power Macintosh Computers.

(If you have an older version of the MacOS, you may need to

down load the Navigation Library)
DesktopFPU

DesktopFPU is the single user version of Desktop Microscopist for 680×0 Macintosh computers with a floating point co-processor (FPU). Due to the calculation intensive nature of Desktop Microscopist, this version has been optimized for an FPU. It will not run on a Macintosh without floating point hardware.
Old Style Key Versions

Earlier versions of Desktop Microscopist shipped with a hardware key requiring a system extension to operate. Newer versions are shipped with a type of hardware key that does not require a dedicated system extension. Native Power Macintosh versions of Desktop Microscopist do not support the old style key. All of these programs are single user only. They are no longer supported by Lacuna Laboratories. Call or email Lacuna to exchange keys.
